Amsterdam's competition for beginning comedians
TUNA (Tiny Underground Newbie Award) started in 2023 as a very tiny competition for very new comedians.
Our first edition was small indeed, in Café de Buurvrouw in downtown Amsterdam. Since then the concept has expanded: it's now a show that runs all year and consists of three different rounds.
The final round includes a big cash prize and takes place in the amazing Mezrab in front of 200 people! Not bad for a couple of newbies!
Why 'TUNA'? Well to be honest, we made a poster with a fish holding a microphone and reverse engineered an acronym to go with that.
TUNA is a celebration of the Amsterdam comedy scene, an underground event for and by local comics who know what it's like to start out and how important it is to have a little recognition in those early days.
First Swim
10 newbies compete for the favor of the audience. The funniest 5 go through to the next round. This round takes place twice each month in a true underground location where starting comedians thrive.
TUNA: Newbie of the Month
The ten funniest fishes from the first two 'First Swim' round compete! This time winning over the audience isn't enough: you'll need to convice a judge panel of experienced comics as well. The audience and the judge panel's vote combined determine the winner of Newbie of the Month!
TUNA: BIG FISH (Newbie of the Year)
Look there's comedians, and then there's Big Fishes. The winners of Newbie of the Month go head to head in a big theater to determine who's worthy of the big title. Again the audience and the judge's vote determine the winner, but this time the judges vote ways heavier. Only the most talented and original newcomer can win this one!
